Separating the right candidates from the pack can be tricky. Interviews may not allow enough time to get to know applicants as well as you’d like. To further complicate things, some people can easily ace an interview – but may not be a good fit for the job.
If you often end up choosing candidates that don’t meet your expectations, it may be time to switch up your approach. Rather than having the same old discussion with applicants, consider getting creative with some fresh healthcare interview questions. These questions work harder by getting to the core of why candidates want the job – and what they can offer your company.
Here are 4 healthcare interview questions to help you find the right candidates:
1. What do you love about your current or past job?
Even though they’re obviously looking for a new job, your candidate should be able to list a couple positive aspects of their current or previous roles. Make sure to take note of the kind of tasks they enjoy, since that can indicate whether they’re a fit for the job. If they can’t think of any positives, they might not have the upbeat attitude you’re looking for.
2. Tell me about a time when you performed a task outside of your job description.
Flexibility is an essential skill in any workplace. If your candidate can expand on a time when they were challenged to perform outside of their typical role – and how this had a positive impact on their professional development – they’re probably resilient and growth-oriented.
3. What interests you about this role – and what concerns you?
What you’re looking for here is someone who’s passionate about the role, but also honest about where they may be lacking experience. They should be confident about what they can bring to your team as well as transparent about where they’ll need a bit more support. If they can strike this balance, it’s a good sign that they’re both ambitious and self-aware.
4. Do you have any questions for me?
While this isn’t the most outside-the-box question, it can help you distinguish between the candidates who just want a paycheck and the ones that really want to contribute to your company. If someone’s the right fit, they’ll have done their research and come up with a few questions to ask. They’ll be naturally curious about the work and eager to learn more.
