What Does Care at Home Really Cost?

When someone you love needs help at home, the first question is often: “What will it cost?”

Ohio’s median rate for a non-medical caregiver was $34 per hour in CareScout’s 2025 Cost of Care Survey, released in 2026. Actual prices depend on your location, provider, schedule, and care needs. Skilled nursing services have separate pricing.

What Could Your Weekly Care Budget Look Like?

Using that $34 hourly benchmark, here are a few examples:

Hours of care per week Estimated weekly cost
10 hours $340
20 hours $680
40 hours $1,360

These examples are calculations based on the statewide median, not specific AMEA Healthcare pricing. Additional charges or minimum visit requirements may apply depending on the provider.

So, where do you start?

Questions to Ask Before Comparing Costs

Before comparing prices, ask providers:

  • What services are included? Explain whether your loved one needs companionship, personal care, or skilled nursing.
  • Is there a minimum visit length? Ask about minimum hours per visit or week.
  • Are there additional charges? Confirm holiday, weekend, transportation, and cancellation policies.
  • Can the schedule change? Find out how care and pricing can adjust as needs evolve.

A written estimate makes it easier to compare options and plan ahead.

Does Medicare Pay for In-Home Care?

Medicare does not cover ongoing personal care when that is the only care someone needs. It may cover certain home health services for eligible individuals who need part-time or intermittent skilled care and meet other requirements. Medicare also does not pay for round-the-clock care at home.

Before building your budget around insurance coverage, confirm which services qualify and whether your chosen provider participates.
