5 Tips to Prepare for a Virtual Interview

virtual interview

As remote work gets more popular, it’s become more common for companies to conduct job interviews virtually. Virtual interviews take place online – typically through a video conferencing app – and usually involve the same types of questions that are asked during a regular interview. However, if you’ve never participated in a virtual interview before, you might have some questions about how to prepare.

To help you get ready, check out our 5 tips for preparing for a virtual interview:

1. Understand the technology

Make sure you have the right software installed on your computer and understand how to access the meeting. You’ll most likely be sent a link via email that will take you to the meeting when you click on it. Check that your camera, microphone, and internet are working properly, so you don’t run into any glitches during the interview.

2. Consider your body language

Remember, your interviewers will only see you from the chest up. If you’re someone who’s very expressive with their hands, or tends to shift around in your seat, it may be distracting to watch you on camera. That doesn’t mean you have to sit perfectly still – you don’t want to come off as a robot. Just make sure your body language is calm and collected.

3. Choose an outfit you feel confident in

Even though it’s virtual, you should still dress the part to get yourself in interview mode. Wear what you’d typically wear to an in-person interview and take extra care to make sure that everything showing on camera – your face, hair, and shirt – look clean and presentable. Your future employer will appreciate that you put in the effort.

4. Plan your location

You should have a clean, well-lit space to serve as your backdrop for the meeting. Make sure it’s free of noisy distractions – including devices, pets, and children. If you live with other people, let them know ahead of time that you’ll need this space for your interview, so they don’t end up accidentally interrupting you.

5. Practice, practice, practice

As with any interview, practice makes perfect. Get in a few test rounds by scheduling a mock interview with a friend. This will help you get comfortable answering questions on camera and rehearsing your main talking points. By the time the real interview rolls around, you’ll be totally prepared, comfortable, and confident.
